Ted's Team
Around 1999, Martin started
regular visits to the Children's Ward at Morriston Hospital.
This developed further with the creation of 'Dr Ted'. With the
support and help from Radio Freeway, this has become one
of the most popular high profile projects.
This has now evolved into 'Ted’s
Team' – the aim of the project is to provide entertainment and
support for children and young people at Morriston Hospital,
i.e. Oakwood Ward (children’s unit) and Dyfed ward (children’s
burns unit). Radio Freeway goes to great lengths to make sure
that the children’s wards are always entertained!

A child’s stay in hospital should
always enjoyable and positive, and Radio Freeway does it’s
utmost to ensure this. The amazing talents of the Monday crew
are heard across the hospital. The children and young people are
asked for any requests they want, and sometimes, if possible and
if willing, they go on air and request their favourite songs. If
not, we can have a friends, relative or carer to telephone the
studio for them!
Top children’s entertainer, Martin
Thompson; ably assisted by fellow Freeway members, visit the
wards as often as they can. With the wild and wacky balloon
model making and the outrageous hats, the youngsters have no
choice but to smile!
During a year of study at Oakwood,
Martin was able to develop techniques in distraction therapy
using a variety of magic props, games and a mixture of toys,
music and fun activities.
The Radio Freeway crew have the
satisfaction of knowing that they have cheered up the children
and young people. The gang is still open to any suggestions as
to what the children and young people would like included in the
broadcast. You can find out more about children's programming
and more about Ted’s Team at Radio Freeway on Monday evenings.
Listen to Radio Freeway on Channels 3, 4 & 14 on the hospital
radio system.
