Written by   in

We did a lot of discos in Swansea this month, including:

  • Swansea Liberty Stadium with Nurses’ Graduation Evening
  • a 21st Birthday party disco at St Helen’s Cricket and Football Club
  • a 70th Birthday at Birchgrove RFC

We attend many types of discos in Swansea and can provide music and lights for a variety of events and functions. We have worked in Swansea Dockers Club, Swansea Waterfront Museum, The Bay View, The Dragon and the Holiday Inn.

Robot Rampage in Margam Castle

It’s our 4th year back with the Heroes and Legends Weekend at Margam Castle. We had a fun time yet despite the rain. It was good to see some old friends, like Doris Dalek, and make some new ones.

In this picture, Martin is setting up the KATT. Kelly is using the microphone as the “voice” of the robot. Ethan is making sure there is a clear pathway for the 8-Foot-Robot-Cat.

We’ve been regarded by Steve Speakman’s Heroes and Legends Weekend Event as “one of the 21 epic things to see“.

During the day, the KATT surprised everyone by bursting into song. It was a hectic day, and most of us were doing our best to avoid the rain.

I was asked to cover for another DJ in Llanelli.

It had been passed over through two other DJs – It wasn’t a wedding, as I thought. It turned out to be a 30th Birthday Party. We all had a great time. There was even a photo booth.

After food, photos and chatting, they all got down and danced. I even had a chance to play some rock music. Birthday girl’s LED shoes made the night. Mobile disco lights on the soles of her feet!

Tom was pumping out the party tunes at the Plough and Harrow, Llansamlet, Swansea for a 50th Birthday Party disco. It is a small, cosy function room upstairs.

The acoustics in the room is perfect and has a lovely atmosphere.  We had a chance to mix the music across the decades including some Rock and Roll tracks, a bit of classic rock and the new stuff.

I ran the 70th Birthday disco at Ford’s Club in Treboeth, Swansea. It gave me a chance to go back in time with songs from the 50s, 60s, and the 70s. Nice.

Children’s Disco in Cardiff

It was an 11-year-old’s birthday Party in Tongwynlais Village Hall, Cardiff. The children enjoyed the special lighting effects, and we played the songs they wanted.

It was a special gig for me as one of my old crew members was here, i.e., Club DJ Gareth Colwill. He was the birthday girl’s uncle. It was great to have a catch-up.

Since we last met, he has done many things. Gareth has worked for the Wave, Liquid-Diva, Gloucester, and a DJ at Fiction and Vinyl Swansea. Gareth works at Pryzm, Bristol and Soda, Cardiff. It was a treat to see him on the kit. The party brought back many happy memories.

Children’s Disco in Bridgend

I had the honour of doing the end of year disco at Oldcastle Primary School in Bridgend. I had a warm welcome from the pupils and staff. They were looking forward to the long summer holidays.

The Nursery class loved the music, joined in the dancing and loved the balloon models. The next one was Reception and Year 1, followed by a lively Year 2 and 3. Finally, Years 4, 5 and 6 turned up with a list of current songs and knew their dance routines. Mascot, the Robot Dog, had a lot of attention, so he was thrilled.

DJ at Christening Party in Pembroke Dock

We arrived at Club Martello, Pembroke Dock to do a Christening Party. The children were happy to chat and discuss their favourite songs. Even the grown-ups had some of their tunes played! Our show included a routine with the play parachute, some magic and the ever-popular balloon models. Mascot, the Robot Dog, had a dance with the children and moved across the dance area and visited the audience further down the function room. Great buffet!

Ethan, Kelly and I had a wet but enjoyable day at Abergwili Carnival. Everyone braved the weather. The boys ran the music and took requests to create a happy summer atmosphere in spite of the rain. We many balloon models and all the children joined in with the magic show. Mascot, the robot dog, visited everyone between the showers. We kept going through the rain.

Children’s Disco and School Prom in Newport

Written by   in
It was Kelly’s first gig. It was Pentrepoeth Primary School in Newport, Gwent. Ethan showed him how to run the music. Kelly typed out all the names of Year 6 on the LED display congratulating the leavers on their achievements and wishing them luck to the “Big School”. They were brilliant at their dance routines. It was nice to see Ethan and Kelly together again. They certainly worked well together.

Milton Keynes, Mat Irvine and Smallspace 5

On Sunday 3rd July 2016, Alex and I travelled over three hours to get to Hanslope Village Hall, near Milton Keynes to attend Smallspace 5 which was run by Mat Irvine and Paul Fitzmaurice.

We are grateful for the invitation to attend the event. We met many interesting people and appreciated all the tips and technical advice on how to improve our KATT! There were many British Science fiction models and props from Stingray, Fireball XL5, Blake 7, Thunderbirds and the original television series of  Doctor Who. Matt Irvine is well known as a Technical Consultant and Visual Effects Designer. He has worked on numerous BBC Television programmes.  These include Robot Wars, Tomorrow’s World, and The Sky at Night, and Tom Baker’s Doctor Who. He created the first K-9 for Doctor Who in 1977. He appeared with K9 Mark III in K9 and Company and Elisabeth Sladen on Totally Doctor Who in 2006. Matt operated K9, Mark IV in David Tennant’s Doctor Who in “School Reunion”. He makes appearances at Science Fiction and Doctor Who conventions, often alongside K9.

Paul Fitzmaurice has a website, modellingtools.co.uk, which is well worth a visit. Modelling-tools offer a personal touch and can answer questions by phone and email. They sell all the modelling tools and accessories to build models. Modelling-tools attend many model shows so people can see their goods close up. Alex and I were privileged to meet the designer of the Eagle space crafts from Gerry Anderson’s Space: 1999, namely, Oscar-winning special effects expert Brian Johnson.
